In retail the useful decision gets made today on yesterday’s data. If the number arrives at month end, all you can do is narrate it. The problem is that information lives split between tills, warehouse, the online store and accounting.
Almost every retail dashboard shows theoretical margin. The real one comes from stripping out promotions, discounts applied at the till, returns and shipping cost on the online side. The gap between the two numbers is usually larger than anyone expects, and it changes assortment decisions.
Knowing how much sits in the warehouse helps very little. What helps is knowing how long it takes to leave, store by store. An item sitting for three months in one shop and running out in another is not a buying problem, it is a transfer problem, and it only shows if the view is per store.
Treating the online store and the shops as two separate worlds produces contradictory decisions: online promotions that empty the shop, or replenishment that ignores where demand moved. The single view is not there to merge channels, it is there to stop deciding blind on each one.
Daily sales need to be daily. Stock needs to be near real time if you sell the same items online and in store. Margin can update weekly. Refreshing everything every minute costs money and improves no decision.
